This piece consists of a wooden stencil template reading "dust to dust to dust..." and the actual dust, dirt, or debris that is used to fill in the lettering of each stencil. The four-part stencil folds up so that it can be easily transported. Debris used for the stencil is gathered from the daily life and activities of the artist; each collection is stored in individual jars.
Sometimes a stencil is made in the place where a given material is found, while on other occasions it is made in a different location. Thus, each stencil exists either as a reorganization of the found in situ or as a cross-pollination of material from one context to another. Regardless of the context in which a stencil is made--whether on the floor of a gallery or on a city sidewalk--the words break apart and are scattered over time until no trace of them remains.
